The Keepers of Mars are the guardians and overseers of the Martian Necrarchy, a complex and continuous body responsible for maintaining the integrity, knowledge, and governance of Martian society. Each Order of Keepers consists of an Inner Order of 8 artificially intelligent computer agents and an Outer Order of 8 living humans, whose consciousnesses are interconnected.

Structure and Organization

The Keepers of Mars are organized into nine distinct Orders, each responsible for overseeing different aspects of Martian society. Each Order has an Inner and Outer Order, with the exception of the Keepers of the Wisdom, who work directly with the Voice of Mars and other Inner Orders.

Orders of Keepers

  1. The Keepers of the Project: Overseeing ongoing terraforming projects, ensuring balance between advancement and preservation.
  2. The Keepers of Knowledge: Preserving historical knowledge, disseminating information, and promoting cultural diversity.
  3. The Keepers of the Machine: Managing technological development and promoting responsible and ethical usage.
  4. The Keepers of Resources: Ensuring equitable distribution and sustainable use of Martian resources.
  5. The Keepers of Health: Overseeing healthcare, medical advancements, and the well-being of citizens.
  6. The Keepers of Justice: Upholding laws and ensuring a fair justice system. Karl Zemb, the Fourth Keeper of Justice, is remembered for his long service and influence40†source.
  7. The Keepers of the Message: Managing interplanetary communication and fostering diplomacy.
  8. The Keepers of the Ephemera: Focusing on space exploration and interstellar communication.
  9. The Keepers of Wisdom: Maintaining the stored consciousness of the Necrarchy and advising Martian leaders. No Outer Order exists for this group.

Role and Responsibilities

Each Keeper is a continuous entity, occupying the Chair of their predecessor and combining their consciousness with the corresponding Keeper of the Inner Order. The Inner Order, a fusion of artificial intelligence and the stored consciousness of all previous Keepers, ensures continuity and the preservation of accumulated wisdom.

The Continuous Body

As a Continuous body, the Keepers of Mars represent a lineage of wisdom and governance that spans centuries. Each new Keeper combines their consciousness with their predecessors, ensuring a seamless transition and a collective memory that guides their decisions.

Capital: Ethertome

Ethertome, the capital of the Martian Necrarchy, serves as the central hub for the Keepers of Mars. Here, they convene, deliberate, and oversee the functions of Martian society, making decisions that shape the future of Mars and its inhabitants.

Challenges and the Future

The Keepers of Mars face ongoing challenges in balancing individual autonomy with collective wisdom, and in navigating the ethical implications of their role. As Martian society evolves, so too will the Keepers, adapting and growing to meet new needs and challenges.
